Every other class you play makes you a better mesmer. If you're having trouble figuring out how to shut down a particular class, create your own and see what makes them tick.

I'd suggest to go a necromancer, simply because (if not doing melee/ranging) you haven't got much of any energy problems in pve so you can tweak 'till your heart contents
It 'should' (<-mind should doesn't mean promises) give you some experience with the different aspects of the game.. hexes for instance, and ofcourse some area of effect damage.
Anyway just read through the different professions and see what would suit you best just make sure you can (and will) enjoy the game with the chosen playstyle.

Ahhh... don't get yourself discouraged by all the "Me5merz too l33t for n00bz" comments. My first char was mesmer (as many ppl here) and is still my favorite character. If you think tha mesmer is character designed for you then don't hesitate to play it. It's not that hard, especially if you do a little research before actually playing. Besides playing any of the professions will not save you from being newbie in the beginning (you will laugh at that moment of game later).
The only disadvantage are difficulities in finding team - but believe they are not that big to make you stop playing messie.

Indeed, this is the only thing you have to worry about, but it doesn't stop me.
When looking back, it really doesn't matter what you start with, if you have the brain enough to ASK and READ about tge game, you have the brain enough to adapt to any class. I can look back and say "Hey, a warrior would have been good to start with" but I eventually made one, so what does it matter? I'll learn either way.
If you want to make the game more fun as far as getting a group fast goes, then go monk, and realize that you aren't supposed to deal damage.

I started with a Mesmer/Monk in Prophesies and am new to GW myself, coming from Everquest.
I took to the Mesmer class like a duck to water because it is similar to the Enchanter Class in EQ 1. (I said "similar" not the "same")
However. . when I got my Factions, (hubby has Prophetsies), I had to delete my Mesmer . I do like the one in Prophet better than the ones in Factions. . .I like the way they look better! (the hairstyle with the 3 curls hanging in the back remind my daughter too much of "WENDY" from Peter Pan! LOL and I cant say as I blame her!)
Anywy I plan on getting Prophetsies just so I can make an older Mesmer and bring her over.So I will one day again have the character that is in my icon!
